Neuropsychological Assessment

The way we think, learn, regulate emotions, and relate to others requires complex processes. When there are concerns about attention, mood, anxiety, personality patterns, memory, learning, Autism, ADHD, neurocognitive issues, or overall development, a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment with an experienced neuropsychologist provides clarity.

Mind Grove Psychology offers in-depth evaluations that consider the whole person, integrating all areas of functioning to create a cohesive understanding of strengths and weaknesses and provide clarity around symptoms that often cause distress and confusion for clients.

What is a Neuropsychological Assessment?

A neuropsychological assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that uses empirically validated tests to examine how the brain functions across multiple domains. These domains may include intellectual abilities, academic skills, attention, executive functioning, memory, language, visual-spatial skills, behaviors, emotions, personality, thought process, and social development.

Neuropsychological assessments are conducted by a licensed psychologist with specialized training in brain–behavior relationships.

At Mind Grove Psychology, we stay informed about best practices in neuropsychological testing and use age-appropriate, evidence-based instruments. Each evaluation is thoughtfully tailored to the individual’s referral questions, history, and goals.

Why Would Someone Need a Neuropsychological Assessment?

A neuropsychological assessment is recommended when there are complex, persistent, or unclear concerns affecting functioning at school, work, home, or in relationships.

Parents, teachers, physicians, or individuals themselves may notice:

  • Attention difficulties, impulsivity, or executive functioning challenges

  • Social communication concerns or possible autism spectrum features

  • Psychiatric distress such as anxiety, depression, mood instability, psychosis, or trauma-related symptoms

  • Learning difficulties

  • Inconsistent performance despite strong intellectual ability

  • Memory or cognitive concerns

  • Diagnostic questions that require clarification

Neuropsychological assessments are often used to:

  • Clarify complex or co-morbid diagnoses

  • Guide individualized treatment planning/level of care

  • Inform therapy, psychiatric care, or behavioral interventions

  • Support eligibility for IEPs, 504 Plans, or disability accommodations

  • Secure testing accommodations (e.g., extended time on standardized tests)

  • Assist with applications to specialized, therapeutic, gifted, or twice-exceptional (2e) schools

Ultimately, a neuropsychological assessment is not simply about assigning diagnoses. It is about understanding patterns of the whole person by identifying strengths, recognizing vulnerabilities, and creating a clear roadmap for healing and long-term growth.

What To Expect During an Evaluation

The evaluation process for a neuropsychological assessment is typically structured as follows:

  1. Initial Interview

    a. If relevant medical, educational, or mental health records are available, they are reviewed prior to testing.

    b. A detailed clinical interview is conducted to gather information about developmental history, medical background, psychiatric history, academic and occupational functioning, family history, and current concerns.

  2. Testing Process

    a. A carefully selected battery of standardized assessments is administered to evaluate cognitive functioning, academic achievement (when appropriate), executive functioning, memory, language, visual-spatial skills, personality, emotional, and developmental functioning.

    b. Testing typically occurs over multiple sessions and may range from 6 to 9 hours, depending on the complexity of the referral questions.

  3. Report and Feedback

    a. All data are carefully scored, interpreted, and integrated into a comprehensive written report. The report includes relevant background history, detailed test findings, diagnostic impressions (when applicable), and clear, individualized recommendations for school, home, workplace, and treatment planning.

    b. A collaborative feedback session is scheduled to review results, answer questions, and discuss next steps. When appropriate, participation in school meetings (e.g., an IEP/CSE meeting) may be included.
